With the year 2016 having come and gone, there is no more perfect time to reflect on the year that was and consider what is important for you in the coming year.

2016 most certainly was a year full of trials and tribulations. Last year we saw the loss of superstars such as Prince and David Bowie, taken well before their time, Donald Trump elected as the next American president, the death of the king, Mohammed Ali and the continued attacks across Europe. On a more positive note, we witnessed a fantastic Olympic games in Rio, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won an Oscar and it was most certainly the year of the underdog, with the likes of the Sharks in the NRL, the Bulldogs in the AFL and the Chicago Cubs winning their first title in over 100 years. It most certainly was a mixed bag!

The most pressing issue, in my opinion that rose to fruition throughout the year 2016, was the ever increasing issue around mental health, especially with young men aged between 20 and 40 years of age. This is an issue that needs to be seriously looked at. I recently attended a funeral for the late Chad Robinson, who departed way too early at the meagre age of 36. I had the pleasure of getting to know Chad through high school and other social circles. Chad had a long running battle with the dreaded black dog, but on the exterior, Chad was a happy go lucky, fun loving guy who was everyone’s mate. So little is known about this dreaded illness.

It really got me thinking about what is important in life. So often we stress and sweat over the small stuff, which in the overall picture, has very little significance. For me, 2017 will bring a focus on 3 areas, being:

  • Having a set of clear goals and most importantly, celebrate achieving them
  • Spending more quality time with my family and friends and savour every moment
  • Have fun! We are only here for a finite piece of time, so let’s enjoy it!!

Most importantly, especially for the young men out there, if you are not feeling great, feeling down or feel as though you are struggling, reach out. On the flip side of the coin, if you suspect someone is struggling a little, ask them ‘R U OK’. Hope you have a fantastic start to 2017.
